Delizsánsz Exhibit Hall

In 1980, the first exhibition hall was opened in Debrecen, fulfilling the will of Dr. Rezső Soó, two-time Kossuth Prize-winning botanist and academic, and every year new collections of motifs are exhibited from the 225,000-strong philatelic collection bequeathed to the city and entrusted to the care of the Stamp Museum. In 1995, the Hungarian Post Office Zrt. The exhibition in the Delizsánsz Exhibition Hall, built in the building of the Debrecen Directorate of the Hungarian Postal Service, shows the history of postal and telecommunications in Debrecen, and original objects and documents can be studied on display cases and wall charts around the post office in the centre of the hall.

Holló László Memorial Museum

The museum of László Holló (1887–1976) is arranged in the former home of the painter. Besides his works created with extensive brush-work in expressive colours, the documents of his life can also be seen here. The museum gives place to the surrealistic paintings of Ernő Hrabéczy as well.

Szabó Magda Memorial House Museum

The literary memorial house is a branch of the Debrecen Reformed College Museum; it has been open since 2017 in the courtyard of the writer’s former school, the Dóczi Girls’ Educational Institute. The separate building evokes the world of Matula with a statue of a 19th century girl with a pint in front of the entrance. The sculpture is a symbol of the fulfilment of human desires in one of Magda Szabó’s most popular novels, Abigél, and the memorial invites us into an imaginary world, made real with original objects. In 2017, the memorial house was included in the Debrecen Register of Values, and in 2018 it received professional recognition.

Déri Museum

The Déri Museum is one of the best-known museums in Debrecen. The museum was founded in 1902 with a donation from the jeweller Artúr Löfkovics. His collection was enriched in 1920 by a donation from the Viennese silk manufacturer Frigyes Déri. The natural history collection has 3,000 unique pieces, the archeology collection 60,000 pieces, the history collection 40,000 pieces, the ethnography collection 20,000 pieces, the fine arts collection 10,000 pieces, and the applied arts collection around 20,000 pieces. The museum’s greatest treasure is the “Christ Trilogy” by Mihály Munkácsy, painted from 1881-1896. The first painting of the trilogy’s “Christ before Pilate” was completed by Munkácsy in 1881. The second piece, “Ecce Homo” was completed in 1896, and the third work, “Golgotha” in 1884. In addition to its exhibits of local cultural interest, the Déri Museum has become renowned for Frigyes Déri’s collection of weapons.

Grand Library of the Debrecen Reformed College

The Great Library of the Reformed Diocese of Tiszántúli has been serving the education of the Reformed College of Debrecen for centuries. In addition to theology, it collects mainly Hungarian-language literature and fiction, as well as local history works on Debrecen and the Tiszántúli congregations. In addition to the open shelf collection, 146 contemporary periodicals are available in the Reading Room. Our modern collection is available for loan, but the use of old books and manuscripts is subject to a research permit. Among our treasures, two Hungarian language monuments from the 16th and 17th centuries deserve special attention: the Debrecen Codex, a collection of legends, meditations and sermons, and the Lugossy Codex, a collection of songs. Among our antiquities, the Luther Bible, illustrated by a pupil of Lucas Cranach, stands out.

Debrecen Reformed College and Ecclesiastical Museum

The Museum of the Reformed College of Debrecen is a member institution of the Collections of the Reformed Diocese of Tiszántúli. After centuries of history and a public period in the 19th century, it was only in 1964 that it received its operating licence. Like the other collection branches, the Great Library and the Archives, the museum is on the one hand a diocesan, i.e. regional, institution, and on the other hand a museum of one of the most patrician Hungarian schools, the Debrecen College, founded in 1538. This double link is evident in all areas of its operation, from the collections to the permanent exhibitions. The museum’s inventory currently includes nearly 17 000 objects in the archaeology, history, school history, fine arts, applied arts, ethnography and numismatics departments. The most important in terms of numbers is the Department of Applied Arts, which preserves the unique treasures of Hungarian art and embroidery culture.
