The puppet theatre’s 2023-24 season exhibitions are fine art experiments with materials, colours and surfaces, with everything that can come to life on the puppet stage. The primary goal of the exhibitions is to draw children’s attention to the immeasurable freedom of the puppet universe in an empirical way.

The second episode of this year’s exhibition series, Expressions of Colours, opened its doors on the 1st of December in the exhibition space of the Vojtina Puppet Theater at Kálvin Square and can be visited until the 28th of January, 2024.

In her opening speech, curator Terka Láposi, the artistic director of the Vojtina Puppet Theater’s Play Theater, said that they were trying to show the possibilities of expressing colours with the tools of puppetry because the tools of puppetry have opened up to endless limits in the last 25-30 years.

Citing the works of social psychologist György Csepeli, she added the expressive power of colours had determined people’s lives for centuries and thousands of years.

Together, these two can be fulfilled in the world of children, who, due to their age, now marvel at the world’s beauty because beauty is the most special of all the values of life.

The manifestation of colours also highlights that colour is one of the main carriers of expression.

Colours represent a force that is inseparable from shapes and space. They have their own dimensions and radiating powers. Lightning and thunder frighten us; the colours of the rainbow and the northern lights calm us down and lift our spirits.

What colour is splendour, power, anger, rage, indifference, calmness and joy? The exhibition also seeks answers to these questions.

Date: until the 28th of January, 2024

Location: Vojtina Puppet Theatre, 13 Kálvin Square

The exhibition, organised around issues of urban locality, is realised in the cooperation between Modem and the Ferenczy Museum Center in Szentendre.

At MODEM, two communities from Debrecen participated in the project, and their works will be displayed in two consecutive exhibitions.

The current exhibition was created in cooperation with the University of Debrecen as part of an elective course. During the semester, different institutions’ critiques of art projects were primarily explored and discussed with the students, including how they relate to Debrecen and the city’s role in their identity. Finally, based on important aspects, three pieces of art were selected and, together with the artists, discussed the backstory of the given works and their possible interpretations.

The central element of the exhibition is a stylised Debrecen map, on which the locations of the objects selected by the students are marked.

Due to the exhibition’s unique approach and focus on urban localities, visitors are guaranteed to have an enjoyable and exciting experience.

Entry to the exhibition is free.

Participating students in the project: Csige Cintia / Faitli Zoltán / Gajdos Boglárka / Györgyi Kata / Hartyányi Panna / Kegyes Lilla / Kiss Tamás / Kosina Dávid / Kulcsár Kevin / Papp Violetta / Toronyi Réka / Váncsa Zsófia

Curator: Don Tamás

Date: until 11th of February, 2024

The exhibition Border Age celebrates the 70th birthdays of two artists from Debrecen, visual artist Zoltán Fátyol and graphic artist István Tamus, by bringing together works from the advanced stages of their careers.

“Border age” refers to a period marking a complex transition process between eras that have gained stability based on their own order as well as a transition that forms a bridge between the past, which is considered to be outdated, and the future, with a gesture of moving forward.

This exhibition of major local artists at MODEM is not intended to be a complete overview of their oeuvres, but it aims to provide insight into the dominant themes, motifs and technical experiments that have defined the careers of these two artists, who have different temperaments.

Their clicks, data ‘bolt-down’, daily stories written in hastags are visualised,’Károly Szabó summarised it.

Exhibition titled ‘Tojama, before the earthquake’ opened in the Egri Borbarát (Friends of Wine) Bar Gallery on Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Street on the 11th of January.

The colourful exotic landscapes and genre pictures selected by the curator János Tóth are award-winning works by Tojama County photographers. Several of the creators have participated in artist camps in Debrecen and Hajdú-Bihar County over the past decades.

The exhibition was opened by István Pinczés, the artistic director of the Tojama Association, and was guided by personal memories. (The Jászai Mari and Uchimura award-winning director visited the landscapes shown in the pictures 70 times in 40 years.) Members of the performing arts section of the Tojama Association also participated in the opening.

With the exhibition, on the initiative of the owner István Kovács, the organisers commemorate the victims of the 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck the west coast of Japan in the first days of the year, when a total of more than 400 earthquakes and aftershocks devastated the region over the course of several days, resulting in nearly 80 deaths. The epicentre of the second strongest earthquake in the history of Japan was about 80 kilometres northwest of the city of Toyama.

The exhibition can be visited until the 13th of February.

The opening of the photo exhibition “Fictures” will take place on Friday, on the 12nd of January at 5 p.m. in the Új Gallery.

At the exhibition, the images from the photo album Fictures, published in 2021, can be seen for the first time in Debrecen. The recordings were made by Tamás Varga, and the accompanying texts were written by Árpád Burai.

Regarding the material of the exhibition, the creators formulated the following thoughts in advance: ‘On the walls special people can be seen, next to them important events in their lives are expressed in text form. Human representation and caption.’

The archaic technique strongly connected to the material world (recordings were made on wet collodion and gelatine dry plates) strengthens the feeling of the present, the real, the having happened. The false image has also often appeared in the history of photography, and it still appears today. The images push the boundaries of the much-heard concept of reality representation – as an uncertain expression of the media – and its meaning. The images appearing in various written or digital media together with the recipient create a kind of alternative reality, the authenticity of which is questionable…

At the opening of the exhibition, the greeting speech will be given by photographer Géza Seres.

Date: 12 January – 16 February

Several of Sándor Szabó Réti’s works can be seen  at the exhibition entitled ‘A Tale Woven from Light’. A special world built from wood, colours and Hungarian folk culture will be revealed to those who visit the DEMKI House (Tímárház) between the 18th of January and the 10th of February, 2024.

‘The Day of Hungarian Culture will be on the 22nd of January and I was invited to this exhibition in connection with this. I collected my previous works, which are wooden, carved, painted sets and altars  from various public institutions and private individuals. On the one hand, the colours are the different reflections and refractions of light, and on the other hand, the world of motifs visible in the works is drawn from Hungarian folk tales and their lessons, ’ he said.

Among other things, the movable puppet wall of the puppet group Báb-Kincs-Tár from Létavértes and the scenery of the Aranyszalma Folk Dance Ensemble from Hajdúnánás will also be on display at the exhibition. In addition to these, two smaller, relief-carved and painted wing altars can be viewed, which were  offered by private individuals for the duration of the exhibition.

The event on the 28th of  January  will be hosted by Imre Hódos Sports Hall. The entire taking of the event will be donated to the Szivárvány az Esőben (Rainbow in the Rain)  Foundation, which helps families in need.

DVSC Legends and Kowalsky and the Vega organised their first charity soccer gala in 2019.

Now they are preparing for the third series of friendly matches, in which the celebrities of Debrecen and the fans of Diósgyőr, as a novelty will also enter the field.  In addition, young football talents will also play.

‘There will be a 2 times 12-minute part, where the DVSC U7 children will compete with the Diósgyőr U7 children, thus halving the field,’ chief organiser, Csaba Bernáth said.

The entire income of the event ‘Let’s play football for a million’ will be donated to the Szivárvány az Esőben (Rainbow in the Rain), which helps families in difficult situations.

The main patron of the event, Deputy Mayor Diána Széles, called the charity soccer gala exemplary, which helps and encourages others to support.

‘The Debrecen Charitable Board is active, which also received support from the soccer gala two years ago, and now I am glad that there are always new contributors  and we can involve new ones in the support system, since this is when the city really moves, ‘ Deputy Mayor Diána Széles emphasised.

The members of Kowalsky and the Vega regard the Debrecen Charity Football Gala as a matter of their hearts, and they will bear it with pride if they lose to former Loki football players.

‘If the goal is noble, then we are happy to keep our face,  if the guys take their work seriously, the end result is clear,’  Gyula Balázs “Kowalsky’ stressed.

The charity soccer gala will be held on Sunday, on the 28th of January, from 4 p.m. in the Imre Hódos Sports Hall, where Kowalsky and the Vega will hold an audience meeting beforehand.

Family Days will be held on 37th and the 28th of January from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The two-day program offers young and old alike a great opportunity to get a glimpse into the lives of the birds and their exotic relatives that spend the winter here. In the framework of an interactive zoo pedagogic session, visitors can  learn how to make their garden bird-friendly, how they can make feeders with their own hands for feathered friends, and they can also observe the native birds of the Great Forest together with binoculars.

The House of Knowledge opens its doors, where guests can take part in an owl spit testing and educational sessions organised by the Hortobágy National Park and the Hajdú-Bihar County Food Rescue Association.

The Green Circle brings local nature conservation  closer to interested people in a playful way, and those who are really capable can take on the role of ethologists and participate in animal behaviour research.

Of course, the park’s birds will also present themselves during a guided tour combined with festive feedings from funny  penguins to tricky  ravens and the exotic inhabitants of Africa, to colourful parrots, but there also will be a falcon show  to admire on both days.

All program elements are free of charge with a zoo ticket.
