The construction of the CATL battery factory in Debrecen can start as early as this summer, starting with a trial operation in 2024 and upscaling to full production in 2025. The Chinese company has 13 plants worldwide, employing 120,000 workers.
Batteries will be supplied to about thirty brands from here, Fred Zhang, CATL’s manager responsible for international communications, told the Hungarian news portal.
The factory in Debrecen will produce batteries for car factories operating in Europe that produce electric cars. From BMW, Daimler, Volkswagen, Toyota and Volvo to Tesla, the factory in Debrecen will serve the car factories operating in Europe.
The planning of the factory is still ongoing, and the documents necessary to obtain the construction permit will be submitted only after finalization.
Fred Zhang spoke about the electricity demand as well. The plant is building electricity generation capacities to ensure its own supply, and they purchase electricity from green power plants with long-term contracts, thus ensuring a sustainable, clean and safe electricity supply. In parallel, the company also plans to build solar power plants.
