Debrecen Airport to be Extended with a New Passenger Terminal

Due to the growing number of passengers flying through the city, Debrecen Airport will be extended with a new passenger terminal.

László Papp, Mayor of Debrecen has announced that a tender for the building of a new passenger terminal will be published later this year.

More and more passengers arrive at Debrecen Airport from year to year. While around 10,000 people used the services of the airport at the beginning of this decade, it has now risen up to 380,000 arrivals at the airport in 2018. The number of passengers is expected to exceed 600,000 by the end of 2019. Clearly additional capacity is now needed.

“The airport is under continuous development, but the current terminal has reached its limit”, said János Vajda, Director of Debrecen Airport. Currently, 14 destinations can be reached directly from Debrecen, and flights to popular resorts and islands are also in operation in winter – he added.

Both charter traffic and scheduled flights of Wizz Air and Lufthansa experienced an increase in passenger numbers.

Authorities declared that Debrecen Airport, located just 5 km from the city center, is one of the safest airports in Europe.

András Radó, Communications Manager at Wizz Air Hungary, said the passenger traffic of Wizz Air Hungary is growing dynamically in Debrecen. The airport recently celebrated the 500,000th passenger during the month of September 2019.
