A new solar power plant is to be developed to the south of Debrecen by ABO Wind. A crucial step for Hungary towards its commitment of a minimum of 10% renewable production after falling behind during 2016 and 2017. ABO Wind is putting a second 6MW plant into production during 2019.
The new solar power plant located south of Debrecen will be a 5.2 MW facility, sufficient capacity to power 850 homes. Although this is a great start, it is a long way from the additional 4000MW supply required within the next 15 years according to MAVIR, the Hungarian transmission system operator (TSO) .
Considering that by the end of 2017 the total capacity of moderate to large power plants in Hungary was less than 9000MW the challenge to add an additional 4000MW is huge task. The key cause for concern is that much of the existing capacity is from plants nearing the end of their operational life.
