Debrecen: Improved Traffic Flow, Education + Safe Living

Debrecen has changed a lot over recent years. From a sleepy, little town, it has become the electric centre of Eastern Hungary, and even the Whole of Central + Eastern Europe.

At the beginning of 2018, Mr. László Papp, the Mayor of Debrecen stated that this is the first time the city has had the chance to come up with its own development strategy. The Mayor stressed that the planned developments greatly serve the future of the city.

Debrecen has one of the biggest development packages, and the New Phoenix Project includes EU, TOP, and other state and government resources.

Debrecen finds it important to play a proactive role in the life of the local inhabitants with large-scale transport developments. The southern bypass has significantly reduced the traffic in the city, – said the Mayor.

Mr. Papp found the closing the refugee camp in December 2015 as an important milestone  that significantly improved the security of the city.

Over the past few years, the extension of the airport was one of the key developments of the Debrecen. The Airport Debrecen plays an important role in the life of the city, since it made Debrecen the centre of Eastern Hungary and the region.

In 2017, Debrecen decided to open up to the rest of the world, and decided to build an international school (International School of Debrecen) in the city to provide children from kindergarten to high school with an international education program in the English language.

The long-awaited development and refurbishment of the public bath has been flying under the radar with little mention, but will start in the summer 2018. The development of the main railway station was also mentioned. It is likely to start soon, however the local government is currently awaiting approval of the construction by the government.

Over the past few years, more than 4,000 new jobs, more than 200 billion forints of capital have arrived in the city by winning companies like Krones and Continental, and more foreign companies are to come.
