In 2018, Debrecen was ranked first in the category of European Small Towns with the Best Investment Attraction Strategy. Debrecen has also received the European City of the Future Award, which the city would hold for two years. Debrecen took part in the competition again this year and finished second behind Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland.

“Apart from Debrecen, there is no Central European settlement that was in the top three in two consecutive rounds, so we could say that Debrecen has had the best investment promotion strategy in its category for years now,” said László Papp, Mayor of Debrecen.

Over five years, more than 6,000 jobs have been created and foreign investment worth nearly €2 billion has been brought to the city. The biggest investment decision of 2018 in Europe was that the new BMW Group plant currently under construction in Debrecen.

The award ceremony of the fDi magazine will be on 10th March 2020 in Cannes.
