Debrecen + BMW: Land Purchase Agreement Signed

The company can produce up to 150,000 new vehicles every year.

The historic land purchase agreement between Debrecen and BMW was signed on September 24, 2019, in Debrecen. The BMW factory construction will commence in 2020.

During the summer of 2018, Péter Szijjártó Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade announced that the BMW Group would build a new European factory in the Northwest Economic Zone of Debrecen.

Subsequently, during October 2018, the global car company signed its first investment-related contracts in Debrecen. Following this, the Municipality of Debrecen started to develop the industrial area in the Northwest Economic Zone. The acquisition of the 500-hectare development site took half a year, parallel to which the decontamination and archaeological excavation began.

According to the October agreement, nearly 400,000 cubic meters of the open-bed ditch and 145,000 meters of closed drainage system were to be built in the largest industrial area of Debrecen to date. More than 1 million cubic meters of humus had to be harvested and spread in the area, and nearly 600,000 cubic meters of soil stabilizer had to be compacted and proper levelling had to be carried out. 2 million square meters of soil had to be stabilized and 1.6 million cubic meters of filling had to be used.

In 2018, the planning, licensing and implementation procedures for the development of transport and other infrastructure in the Northwest Economic Zone were carried out in accordance with the agreement between the Municipality of Debrecen and the Ministry of Innovation and Technology.

Preparations for the area are progressing according to plan and at a good pace.

On September 24, 2019, representatives of the Municipality of Debrecen and the BMW Group signed a contract for the purchase of the land needed to build the factory.

The development area will become the property of the company in several instalments for the coming spring. According to the loan agreement, the purchase price is used by the Municipality of Debrecen for loan repayment.

“BMW is making the biggest investment in the history of the city, which will be a development that will shape Debrecen’s future. The global company is not only building a factory in the city but is also dynamizing the education system in Debrecen in cooperation with the Debrecen Vocational Training Center and the University of Debrecen. In the 2020s, Debrecen will become a thriving, strong European automotive center, new business and economic center for Hungary and the region”, stated László Papp, Mayor of Debrecen.
