Contemporary Russian Poster Design Exhibition

July 19, 2019 @ 8:00 am September 15, 2019 @ 5:00 pm

The culture of a people is tied closely to their homeland and territory.  It is a powerful, emotional connection that applies to all territories, including the Russian Federation.

How did the collapse of the Soviet Union influence graphic design?

This summer an exhibition of Russian Poster Art is at the MODEM Centre for Modern and Contemporary Arts, asking the following question of the visiting audience.

“How do Prominent Russian contemporary poster art and graphic design works compare to the expectations and stereotypes of the western world?”

How has Russian graphic design and typography changed, is the political symbolism and propagandistic style of the past as pronounced as previously?

It is a fascinating topic for Western Europeans and those from further afield.

Is the new Russia recognizable in the exhibition pieces?  Is there now such a thing as a school of Russian design, stylistically speaking?

Before visiting this exhibition, know what your expectations are, because they are sure to be challenged, laying all stereotypes bare.
