Power Plant Night

On October 11th, the Hungarian Energy and Utility Regulatory Authority (MEKH) organizes the first Power Plant Night. The aim of the event is to raise awareness of the importance of energy.
On October 11th, 42 power plants will the doors of their heating plants and allow visitors to get an insight into the life of power plants.
“One aspect of conscious and energy-efficient use is how this can be done in homes and public institutions. It is also important to know who this energy is produced by, how and from what sources. A good example of this will be the professionally guided tour at the Dunamenti Power Plant,” said Zsolt Scherer, spokesman of the Authority.
Power Plant Night “tour guides” will inform visitors and answer questions about the importance of energy production during the nationwide initiative.
The events will take place in 42 locations across the country, between 2 pm and 10 pm on October 11th, 2019.

E.ON Energiatermelő Kft’s Debrecen Power Plant consists of six gas engines with an electric power of 1940 kW each. Gas engines produce not only electricity but also heat, which is used to heat various buildings and facilities in the city of Debrecen. Most of the thermal energy is extracted from the exhaust gases from the engines. Visitors can get an insight into the operation of gas-fired power plants, the dimensions of gas engines and the basics of their operation, as well as the process and importance of heat and electricity production. Those interested will be guided through a gas-powered power plant from motors to chimneys, from generator to transformer.

VEOLIA’s Debrecen Power Plant produces the required heating heat and domestic hot water for nearly 32,000 residential and 2,200 other consumers. In addition to conventional boiler heat production, the site is also equipped with cogeneration and one of the most efficient combined-cycle technologies currently available. District heat is delivered to consumers through the city’s 88-kilometer district heating system. In addition, during the summer, the power plant also provides cooling power to a number of renowned institutions, such as the Kölcsey Center in Debrecen, or the largest shopping center in the region, the FORUM.
Visitors will learn about the past and present of the plant and will have a unique insight into the plant’s main equipment during operation. As they walk around the site, they will be able to view boilers and turbines several meters high from close range. Their specialists show visitors the challenges of a power plant in an urban environment. During the visit, visitors will also be able to see boilers and other power plant equipment used in the first half of the last century.
