Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office Gergely Gulyás said at the opening ceremony of the Mercure Debrecen that Debrecen has reason to be proud of its new spa and the largest Hungarian investment in the city, the CATL battery factory, which will create thousands of jobs.

According to the minister, Debrecen’s dynamic development is of great importance not only for the region but also for cross-border areas.

Gyula Szűcs, president and CEO of Szinorg Universal Zrt. and the owner of Bajcsy Invest Kft., said that guests will have 135 rooms and 20 apartments, a restaurant, a café, a fitness room, and three conference and meeting rooms.

The support of the Hungarian state and the Hungarian Tourism Agency made it possible to bring the first international brand, Mercure, owned by the Accor Group, to Debrecen, of which the new hotel will be a member, he added.

Péter Horváth, CEO of the Tourism Development Agency, recalled that under the Kisfaludy Tourism Development Program, it was possible to apply for the construction of hotels with more than 100 rooms, which is how the HUF 8.5 billion investment in Debrecen won HUF 3.5 billion in non-refundable funding.

Mayor of Debrecen László Papp (Fidesz-KDNP) said the investment was a great success, as the city had not had a hotel opening in over a decade. The most important thing for the economic development of Debrecen is to create harmony between the different areas of the city, he stressed.

The mayor pointed out that tourism is developing well, adding that the number of overnight stays was 502,000 in 2019, before COVID-19.

Events including the Debrecen Flower Carnival, the World Swimming Championships, and the international motorcycle race play a significant role in the city’s tourism and require the availability of accommodation of a good standard, he explained.
