The “Person of the Year” award started ten years ago in 2011 in Debrecen. This year, due to COVID-19, the jury has decided to evaluate a performance that symbolizes 2020. The award went to Dr. István Várkonyi, Acting Director of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Clinical Center of the University of Debrecen, for his hard work in the epidemic situation.
Symbolically, István Várkonyi represents the professionals, doctors, nurses, and other members of the medical staff who take part in the truly heroic struggle in which people’s health must be protected every minute of the day.
Debrecen is in good hands, we have one of the most developed health infrastructures in the country. I am very grateful to the Director for being able to keep the front without sparing his own health in recent months. Of course, it should also be mentioned that there are victims of the epidemic, but perhaps I am not mistaken in saying that these numbers in Debrecen are not outstanding, László Papp, Mayor of Debrecen, said.
