The institution, operated by the Parish of the Reformed Great Church of Debrecen is taking care of disabled young people. It received 500 million HUF support from EU and Hungarian government funds.

The fund will be used to renovate an old school at the road Kishegyes to provide a state-of-the-art care facility for disabled young people and students with special needs.

“Since Immánuel Home and School is not a traditional school, our children do not graduate at the age of 14, and we provide them with very complex services until the age of 30. It is the reason why we are struggling with a permanent lack of space,” said Zsófia Győri, Director of the institution.

There are now 45 disabled children on the waiting list. The property that will be created from the fund, will be a great help. By expanding the school building, they will be able to educate 60 young people there.

Within the framework of the project, a former school building will be transformed and expanded to meet the needs of students. During the transformation, classrooms, special employment rooms, community spaces, office, service and social facilities will be developed. Special development tools, furniture and IT equipment will be purchased as well.

Quality care for disabled school children and non-school-age disabled young people

“Debrecen, as a caring city, will continue to support the professional work of the Institution in the future”, said László Papp, Mayor of Debrecen.

“In order to help, serve, care; we need dedicated people, institution leaders, teachers, and staff. The institution and its expertise is an enormous help for parents and families who obviously do not have this knowledge”, the mayor stressed.

The new, niche institution does not only provide quality care for disabled school children but it is also enables the non-school-age young people with special needs to receive a full-time care, while they are living in the family.

The institution is expected to be ready by the end of 2021 and it will provide for 140 children in total with quality care.
