A four-star, 155-room business hotel is being built in the center of Debrecen from a HUF 8.2 billion investment.
Gergely Gulyás, the head of the Prime Minister’s Office, said that a significantly larger accommodation capacity must be available for visitors to Debrecen to allow the city to become a regional center according to the government’s intention.
The investor, with the support of the government, has begun the construction of a hotel. Gyula Szűcs, Chairman and CEO of Bajcsy-Invest Kft. said that the new Mercure hotel will be the first international hotel industry brand in Debrecen, and Mercure is the largest mid-range hotel chain in Europe.
Péter Horváth, CEO of Kisfaludy 2030 Tourism Nonprofit Development Ltd., emphasized that the Hungarian government supported the hotel development Debrecen with more than HUF 3.4 billion through the Kisfaludy program.
With the help of the program, 103 private accommodations have been renovated in Debrecen and 1,300 in the region with a grant of more than HUF 4 billion, said the CEO, adding that in addition to the 4,100 rooms renovated, another 350 rooms were established or renewed for more than HUF 1 billion.
With the construction of the hotel, we are renovating a very old property, so this development is also an important investment from the point of view of urban rehabilitation, said Lajos Kósa, Member of Parliament, at the foundation stone laying. He added that for the people of Debrecen, this also means the development and improvement of the so-called Bull block. According to Kósa, this would be the first step in the rehabilitation of the city center, which could be followed by, for example, by the Mathias Corvinus investment, the construction of car parks or the renovation of the Jewish quarter.
The 3300-square-meter hotel will have 155 rooms on 3 floors for 310 guests, a restaurant, bar and lounge with nearly 120 seats and an open restaurant terrace. In addition, a 120-seat, sectional conference room and an underground garage will be built.
Mercure is a mid-range hotel brand created in France in 1973 and purchased by Accor in 1975. Mercure operates 810 hotels in 63 countries.
The business hotel in Debrecen is planned to be completed next summer.
