HUF 6 million have been earmarked for fixed-speed camera installations in Debrecen’s 2023 draft budget, which will be voted on 23rd of February by the city’s assembly.
In 2022, new devices, so-called traffic boxes, were introduced in Debrecen traffic. At the end of April, one such speed measuring device was installed on Szabó Kálmán Street and in September on Antal Nagy Budai Street, in sections where a speed limit of 30 km/h is in force.
Mayor of Debrecen László Papp previously said that car traffic is constantly increasing in the city, which is obviously causing problems for residents everywhere.
“I am constantly getting requests about where to build speed bumps. If all requests were met, we would now have speed bumps in almost every part of the city. I don’t support this, I don’t see this as a solution to the problem of speed bumps for everyone. That’s why we have moved towards speed boxes,” he said.
The mayor said that the installation of such a device would require a lot of resources since not only the device itself would have to be paid for but also a surveillance camera to prevent damage. Where they will be placed will be decided in consultation with the police.
