Northeast Hungary Economic Development Zone strategy is completed

The government wants to develop economic zones in northeast Hungary covering six counties.

Minister of Innovation and Technology László Palkovics spoke about the plans in Nyíregyháza on Saturday.

The concept of economic development, broken down by counties and cities with county status, might be adopted by the government in January, and concrete projects will appear as part of the new EU budget cycle, said László Palkovics, – the government commissioner responsible for the complex development of the zone.

The aim of establishing the Northeast Hungary Economic Development Zone is to develop Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Hajdú-Bihar, Heves, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Nógrád and Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg counties with a cross-border impact.  Tokaj-Zemplén region will have an independent development plan.

The strategy focuses on the key economic sectors in this area of northeastern Hungary including automotive and machinery, chemicals, plastics and rubber, healthcare, electronics, IT, agriculture, manufacturing and tourism.

In addition to economic development, projects related to infrastructure, transport, energy, business development and vocational training will play an important role in the strategy, the minister emphasized.
