Passenger Traffic at Debrecen Airport Might Exceed 700 Thousand in 2020

There are more passengers traveling not only from Eastern Hungary and Romania but also from Slovakia and Ukraine from the Debrecen Airport. Last year, citizens from 136 countries used the flights and airport service.

Passenger traffic at Debrecen Airport increased 22 percent in January 2020, compared to January 2019, stated János Vajda, Managing Director of Debrecen International Airport Kft.

Last year, 600 thousand passengers turned around at the airport, and this number could exceed 700 thousand in 2020.

The Debrecen Municipality, as the majority owner, sees the airport as a strategic partner, which has enabled it to implement a number of developments last year and increased passenger comfort.

Currently, a tender for the new terminal that could serve up to 2 to 2.5 million passengers a year is under preparation. At the same time, the runway is being prepared for reconditioning, which would also accommodate cargo aircraft.

In summer 2020, in addition to flights to Kefalonia, travelers can take a charter flight to the island of Zakynthos, Greece. Flights will also be launched to Turkey, the city of Antalya located on the shores of a Mediterranean bay. There is an agreement with a Bulgarian charter to provide flights to Burgas on the Black Sea coast, as well as with an Egyptian charter flight to launch flights between Debrecen and Hurghada located on the Red Sea.
