The new Debrecen Main Railway Station will meet the transport needs of the city

At the beginning of April, the call for tenders for the design of the re-envisioned Debrecen Main Railway Station was published.

Mayor of Debrecen László Papp said that the publication of the call for tenders was a major step forward and that the main railway station had always been said to be on the agenda, but that work was ongoing. Last year, the study was completed, which solidified the main technical parameters of the rethought main railway station plan, the mayor said, adding that the investor, National Infrastructure Development Ltd, is now looking for a designer.

According to the mayor, it is a complex development. Several transport sectors have to be combined. The development has to coordinate pedestrian, cycling, motor vehicle, and public transport (bus, trolleybus, tram, and rail) within the framework of an architectural solution.

László Papp said it was very important that the idea was not to have a large bus park on Petőfi Square but a bus station with sufficient capacity, with a continuous flow of vehicles arriving and departing. The planned solution will allow the municipality to respond to the changes that have taken place in the city in recent years. They will create a new main station with traffic capacity and facilities that will meet the current transport needs of the city.

The mayor said the re-envisaged building complex would provide room for changes so that if the demand for public transport continues to grow, they will be able to cope with it.
